THE END OF AN ERA!
A very long-standing client, I have been working with South Australian Native Title Services (SANTS) since returning to Adelaide in 2005, initially as part of the service offering of the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement (ALRM), and later as their own incorporation. Over the years (and in an on-going fashion) I have designed their stationery, brochures, strategic and business plans, website, publications (including internal newsletters and the Aboriginal Way newspaper) and annual reports, like this one. Sadly, this will be my last project with SANTS, as they are transitioning to Aboriginal-owned service providers. Whilst I understand this decision, I am still gutted. Having been their designer since inception, I am very passionate about what they do, and will certainly miss working with them going forward.

WINE TIME!
Having known Vicki (Matchett Production/Big Sissy Foods) for many years as a purveyor of perfect pickles (and other condiments) and a queen of tarts, it was very exciting to learn she had taken a brief break from her hectic hospitality/chef life to propagate grapes! When she and Fiona then approached me to design their inaugural wine label, I was pretty chuffed, to say the least. It has been a pleasure working with them and bringing their vision to life. Working on the ‘Giddy Row’ illustration also meant getting my pencils out for the first time in a good while. Although the final illustration needed to be computer generated, the lead up work was sketched out whilst enjoying the glorious Kimberley, and probably a wine or two! The Pohutakawa Estate logo also needed to be created, using a stylised blossom from the Pohutakawa tree. Bottling is happening now, but this is a limited release for friends and family only. This time round anyway! Here’s cheers to Vicki and Fiona!

VOICE OF YOUTH AWARDS
I have known the extraordinary Fuzzy Trojan for almost two decades, amongst other things, working alongside him in a volunteer capacity with The Graham F Smith Peace Foundation. He is a social activist, entrepreneur, consultant, builder, teacher, volunteer, author, communicator, mentor, and all-round unusual person. His most recent project stemmed from his understanding of the need of a voice for Adelaide’s youth, many of whom cannot vote and therefore have no public voice. He has donated a house to a Foundation which will use rental income to give youth this voice. And later this year, funds will be going to the inaugural Voice of Youth Awards, founded by Fuzzy. My small part in this social enterprise has been to design a logo for these awards, which I am very proud to showcase here.

MOJO MAGIC!
I have worked with Melissa for different organisations in the past, so was thrilled when I reached out recently and found she was embarking on a new and exciting venture of her own, and indeed had the need of a graphic designer. Such perfect serendipity! We are both very passionate about what we do, so work very well (and very hard) together to achieve desired outcomes. I am totally inspired and engaged by Melissa’s ideas around UrMojo, and it is such a great pleasure to be working with her again. The initial body of work includes redrawing the brand logo, creating an investment opportunity flyer, designing stationery items, building a website, and creating a style guide to keep everything on-brand. I certainly wish the endeavour all the very best. Do check out the website to learn more, and discover the magic!

EXTENDING THE FAMILY
After designing the ‘mother’ brand for Mara Kundilje, Barbara was excited for me to work on creating logos for their sub-brands. Again this involved drawing graphic elements taken from an intricate Indigenous artwork, of which there were only fairly poor images available. Whilst challenging, again the results were well-received, creating a lovely little ‘family’. It continues to be a pleasure to work with this team, and I wish them all the very best in all their endeavours!

MAKING MORE (CON)SENSE
As promised, the ConSense website is now live! After working with Yavin as part of the team on the Mara Kundilje project, he approached me to work on collateral for his own business. Always good to be working with someone familiar, on a new and exciting venture! The logo uses graphic elements to portray consulting – connection, communication and continuation – and colour to highlight the cross, representing the health aspect, the result is striking and professional. Collateral including business cards and letterheads followed on from the branding exercise and, most recently, the website has come to life. A great collaborative creative journey, and another very happy client!!!

FESTIVAL FLEURIEU FEVER IS UPON US!
Festival Fleurieu started its life back in 2005 as the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, under the directorship of friend/client Lorraine McLoughlin, to showcase the artists, arts, heritage, landscape and community of the Yankalilla district. It is now a multi-award-winning biennial celebration, with diverse events held in venues across the district. I met Lorraine in mid-2008 to begin work on her first self-published book, Barbara Robertson: An Australian artist’s life. With her encouragement I became involved and am proud to have supported the last seven Festivals, providing my design services pro bono. Over the years, this has encompassed everything from refreshing the logo – the leafy sea dragon ‘icon’ is taken from a painting by George Tetlow, one of the subjects in Lorraine’s more recent book, George Tetlow and Mark and Jill Pearse: Lives in art – to working on websites with Murray Russell and Urszula Richards. All of this working alongside the amazing and dedicated Festival Board, planning committee, coordinators/producers and the many energetic and talented volunteers. As well as immersing myself in the Festival itself, of course! And it is my greatest pleasure, and a huge honour, to be a Patron of this wonderful Festival. This year we celebrate our 10th Festival, so come on down!!!

A BRAIN-BASED APPROACH
I have been working with Leonie on and off for well over a decade, initially with the NeuroLeadership Institute (formerly Results Coaching Systems), and later when she embarked on her own endeavour, The Academy of Brain-based Leadership. It is always a pleasure, and we are very much on the same page, so to speak! The past few months have seen me working with Leonie to design/create and finalise an extensive leader training toolkit, including facilitation guides, PowerPoint slide decks and support documents, for a comprehensive series of targeted team and 1:1 training sessions. This incredible toolkit is soon to be available for purchase from their website.

IN GOOD (AND STRONG) HANDS
Another referral and recommendation through someone I have worked with for many years, Barbara came to me to design a logo for their new venture. This was quite a challenge, as the graphic elements were to be drawn from an intricate Indigenous artwork, of which there were only fairly poor images available. Whilst challenging, the result is something everyone involved is very happy with, and it has been a pleasure working with a new team. I wish them all the very best in their endeavour!

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!
The final annual report for 2022 is now done and dusted. It’s always a pleasure to come together with Kaz and the team at the Australian Himalayan Foundation to work on this project. A pleasure, but a challenge that leaves us feeling as though we’ve conquered Everest ourselves! They are the best bunch to work with, and I feel proud to support the work that they do in the Himalaya – this year celebrating their 20th year. Woohoo! Do check out their website, and lend your own support, if you are able. It will certainly be greatly appreciated!

I was first introduced to Anna Solding (MidnightSun Publishing) some years ago, when she, and other members of a writers’ group, including long-term client and friend Lorraine McLoughlin, were working on getting a book published for a fellow member and they needed a designer. Recently, I have been working with Anna (and her super-talented authors and illustrators) designing a number of children’s books, which has been a refreshing diversion of target audience for me!

I first met Lorraine back in 2008, when I began work on her first self-published book, Barbara Robertson: An Australian artist’s life. Over the years I have worked with her on many projects, including Festival Fleurieu, Books & Words Group and another two books, George Tetlow and Mark and Jill Pearse: Lives in art and Thinking on paper – as well as designing and maintaining the website she shares with her artist husband, Peter Fitzgerald. This recently published family history, Glimpses into the family heritage of Kevin and Sylvia Penny, has been a mammoth, but very enjoyable and interesting journey, with much of it (coincidentally and serendipitously) corresponding with my own geographical travels of late. Lorraine is collecting the physical books today, so here’s hoping they meet with her esteemed approval!

Now working with the District Council of Coober Pedy, Steve approached me recently to redesign their simple community newsletter. This is now the second edition, which I worked on having recently spent time in Coober Pedy on our travels north. This gave me a greater awareness of the context, audience and reach of the newsletter, and I was also able to use my own scenery shots at the bottom of the pages!

THE VOICE OF REMOTE HEALTH
Initially I was introduced to CRANAplus by one of my printers, whilst at the same time referred by another client, and was then engaged to revamp their quarterly magazine. This was back in early 2010 and the magazine has gone from strength to strength! I have had the pleasure of partnering with them ever since, working across all their collateral, including annual reports, annual conference programs and other conference materials, course training manuals, posters and flyers, advertising and stationery. I am happy to have built up strong, collaborative working relationships with many members of staff across the country, and am proud and happy to be part of the amazing CRANAplus family. This is the first edition of the magazine I have worked on since being permanently on the road, and the whole process was seamless, thanks to good comms on the Yorke Peninsula and the fab team at CRANAplus!

WHAT’S COOKING?
Influenced by a monthly veggie swap held by the Natural Resource Centre in Normanville (my ‘other’ community), and overwhelmed by a bumper crop of tomatoes, I started the V4V produce swap in the summer of 2015. Initially taking over the outdoor tables of a restaurant on O’Connell Street, the swap aimed to bring community members together to ‘share’, be it home-grown produce, home-baked goods, home-made pickles and jams, or simply stories. After a short time the swap moved to my home in Gover Street, where it became a hugely popular community event. Also, given I had a courtyard where everything grew in pots, I thought it a good way to inspire others who didn’t have gardens to grow their own produce. Attracting new people each month, but also maintaining a bunch of ‘regulars’, there are now over 200 people on my mailing list. Thank goodness they never all came at the same time! The turnout was generally about 20–30 people – like-minded, but from all walks of life. The atmosphere was relaxed and nurturing. A safe place to be and share. Given COVID lockdowns and restrictions during 2020 we managed just three swaps, but the final pre-Christmas champagne cocktail swap in December gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate the end of what had been a trying and challenging year for us all. Whilst ongoing restrictions have meant we haven’t been able to meet often since, we have remained in contact. That is how the idea of sharing a collection of recipes was born which, with the help of a City of Adelaide grant, and a hard-working project team, has culminated in this cookbook. The official launch was held on Sunday 27 March at Wellington Square/Kudnatu, North Adelaide, with a fabulous turnout and so many cookbooks sold on the day, that we have ordered a reprint! All proceeds from sales of the cookbook will go to support the work of the Café Outside the Square. Please help us to support them by purchasing your own copy via the link. The recipes have all been submitted by members of our ‘community’, which now reaches across the country, and around the globe. We hope you enjoy them, and our stories.

CARVING OUT A CAREER
I have known Geoff Bromilow now for almost a decade. He and his wife Kathryn Pentecost are the closest neighbours (geographically) to our farmhouse in Delamere. I was thrilled when he and Kathryn approached me to work on Geoff’s website, and I very much enjoyed putting it all together. Geoff is an extremely focussed and talented sculptor, as well as being a very popular tree feller (fella). Also a quiet activist, witnessing first-hand the devastation that was 9/11. At the time, he documented history in photographs, then ultimately (a decade later), authored by his wife Kathryn, published this photographic essay as Peace & War: 9/11 stories, which is available to purchase by contacting Geoff through his website. While you are there, do have a browse, and also note that Kathryn has a book in the pipeline that will expound much more about Geoff than I possibly can! If you are interested in finding out more, you can also contact Kathryn here.

THE BEFLOWERING OF SHEBUS!
In her former life Shebus, our motorhome, lived on Kangaroo Island, being hired by all and sundry. When we saw her advertised for sale on Marketplace last year, we had already paid a deposit on a Winnebago. However, we immediately went to see her, and it was love at first sight! She had exactly the right bones and structure for our needs, and oodles of pockets for us to store our needs – and wants! We knew immediately she was our girl. We named her Shebus, and gave here the plates to prove it. We managed a few short trips together, down to the Fleurieu a couple of times, and up to World’s End, before she had her solo sojourn to Manta Automotive to have a full health check and a few nips and tucks. Before she came home in January, I designed her beautiful flower trail decals. Then the amazing team at Ochre Digital, with very limited time, managed to fit in absolutely perfect production and installation. She then had a good scrub and polish, and we filled her with the final bits for our trip. And then off we went to start our adventures together!

NATURE TO NURTURE
The Greater Adelaide Environment Network (GAEN) is a newly formed alliance of nine community-based environment (or natural resource) centres operating across the Greater Adelaide area, bringing together a wealth of experience and local connections under a new collaborative and coordinated
framework. Having worked with the Normanville Natural Resource Centre, now the Fleurieu Environment Centre (FEC), when GAEN needed a prospectus document to share with potential funders and government departments, the chair of the FEC management committee came to me to design it. The result, a simple, clear, professional document, was very well-received by the steering group, and will hopefully prove be a great tool for securing future funding. |

ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER…
Given all the restrictions and ramifications of COVID-19 in the lead-up year, it was by no mean feat that Festival Fleurieu happened. And it didn’t just happen, it was a hugely-popular, well-attended, vast and varied 15-day showcase of the district. And again, it didn’t just happen, to stage it took all the energy, resilience and resources of a dedicated, passionate and very flexible team… but it also took all of the kitty! As a means to raise some funds towards the next Festival in 2023, the idea of a silent auction was sparked, with local businesses and individuals donating worthy items and services to be auctioned. So I thought I’d join in, and donated a logo design package, curious to see whose bid would be successful, and inspired by the prospect of working with someone new (as ever). Enter Cheryl Willie – Une Femme Fitness. Turns out I had met her, and even been to one of her classes before she moved to the other side of the Fleurieu. Small world! Initially she had wanted me to work on a logo for her husband’s business, but then decided on a rebrand for her own. It was so good to meet up, and talk/walk Cheryl through the process, and discuss some directions. We chatted like we’d known each other forever, and by the end of our meeting I had complete confidence I was going to nail it for her. Cheryl was so easy to work with, and is thrilled with the outcome. Watch out for it on her vehicle in the near future!

HERE WE GO AGAIN… The popular productions of Northern Light Theatre Company (NLTC), presented at Shedley Theatre, have been enjoyed by my family for four generations now. On returning to Adelaide from London in 2005, I was thrilled to revive my own passion and accompany my dad for a thoroughly entertaining show. We soon became ‘regulars’ and over the years have also built strong connections with members of the hard-working front-of-house and behind-the-scenes teams. In 2014 NLTC was in need of graphic design support. It was a natural progression for me to offer my services pro bono and become more involved with this wonderful group. I find it a true pleasure to support this cause and work with this amazing team, and it is great to know my efforts really do help.
